Marion Broyhill

"Big Marion" was born Jan.
22, 1834, probably in Tazewell County, Illinois. One source
stated that he left for the California Gold Rush and was never heard
from again, but that was in 1848, when he was but 14. Gold Rush
or not, he is listed on the 1880 Census for Des Moines, Iowa with his
wife Elvira and their three daughters. Cora, Ida May and Eda. Correspondence with
family members also revealed that Calvin gave the Alaska Gold Fields a
whirl during the 1880's. He reportedly died in 1893.
Elvira died in 1933 or 1934, location not reported.
In 1891, Calvin Marion owns real estate in Des Moines
Mrs. C. M. Broyhill appears on the 1910 census for Des Moines
Ward 1, Polk, Iowa. She is 75 years old and a widow.
Living with her is daughter, Alice, age 56, George son, age 49 and
Cora, granddaughter, age 10 |
